Extreme Heat and Low River Levels Disrupt European Power Infrastructure

Extreme heat and drought are putting growing pressure on energy infrastructure across central and eastern Europe.

The Guardian reported record temperatures in several countries, including Slovakia, Austria and Hungary. In Slovakia, the hydrometeorological agency recorded a new national high of 42C at Dolné Plachtince.

The more immediate industrial issue is the effect of low water levels on electricity generation. Authorities in Poland were forced to shut the Kozienice and Połaniec coal-fired power plants after critically low water in the Vistula River limited the cooling water available to the facilities.

The disruption removed approximately 1.3 GW of capacity from Poland’s power system.

Water availability is becoming an industrial constraint

The Polish shutdowns show how drought can affect industrial infrastructure even when the primary problem is not a shortage of fuel or generating equipment.

Hungary also faced disruption at the Paks nuclear power station. One turbine had returned to operation after Danube water levels recovered slightly, but the country’s prime minister still called for voluntary reductions in electricity consumption during the hot weather.
